Sergio Herrera: "I want to be here"

The rojillo goalie addressed the media after signing his contract extension through the 2027-28 season

Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera spoke to the media today at El Sadar after signing a two-year contract extension with Club Atlético Osasuna. Alongside club president Luis Sabalza and sporting director Braulio Vázquez, the rojillo goalie expressed his gratitude to the club, the president, the Board of Directors, the sporting department, teammates, and coaching staff.

Regarding his contract extension, Herrera said, “When Braulio approached me, he was honest and told me he counted on me. When I heard that, it took a load off my back because I wanted to be here, and that’s what has happened.”

The Miranda native reflected on his eight years with the club and his key role on the team. “We’ve experienced many beautiful things, both collectively and individually. I feel fortunate to be part of the club’s recent successes. Individually, my injury made me stronger and shaped me into the goalkeeper I am today. While it’s easy to highlight the Copa del Rey, my biggest takeaway is being fortunate enough to do what I love—enjoying every day, training at Tajonar, and being part of a wonderful locker room. I also live in a city that loves football, and when you go out for coffee, you can see the pride Osasuna fans have.”

He added that when he first arrived, he did not know what to expect, but over time, he became more connected to the club. “As time passed, I liked it even more. It became my home, and I learned what Osasuna truly is.”

Looking toward the future, Herrera mentioned, “Football doesn’t have a memory. You might reflect on how great a season you had last year, but in the first game of the new season, you might be benched. I have to remind myself that what’s happened in the past is over; I need to focus on the new season and be at my best. As Braulio said, [goalkeeper] Aitor [Fernández] always works hard with a great attitude.” He also expressed gratitude to the club’s goalkeeping staff, stating, “I want to thank Aitor and [goalkeeper coach] Richard [Sanzol] because if I have performed at my level, it’s thanks to them.”

Lastly, Herrera thanked former rojillo goalkeeper and club legend Roberto Santamaría, who was present for his renewal announcement. “I am very thankful to Roberto. He has always trusted me, and having one of the best goalkeepers, if not the best, in your corner is truly special. His trust is a testament to our connection, and I appreciate his friendship over the years and his support.”

Braulio Vázquez: "It makes me proud"

Vázquez, the sporting director, expressed pride in renewing such a key position: “I hope there are many more years ahead. I don’t need to exaggerate; Sergio has been crucial for Osasuna for the last eight years. He joined the club on a transfer for 300,000 euros, and he has proven that every penny was worth it.”

Vázquez also acknowledged the goalkeeping staff: “Thanks to Richard Sanzol and Aitor Fernández for pushing Sergio to improve. Having another goalkeeper who not only competes with him but also elevates the competition is crucial. Having two talented goalkeepers ensures healthy competition.”

He concluded, “It makes me proud. As Roberto [Santamaría] said, ‘Osasuna is in good hands.’ My goal as sporting director is to make sure the players feel proud to be here, comfortable, and committed to staying with us for many years.”
