Alessio Lisci: “We controlled the game, but we are dumbfounded by what happened to Iker”
Osasuna head coach Alessio Lisci addressed the media Tuesday ahead of the team’s Copa del Rey first-round match against Sant Jordi on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Son Malferit.
“It’s a special tournament. We’re eager to get back to winning and to play a good match,” Lisci said. “The Copa should obviously be exciting.”
He acknowledged the team is short on first-team players but emphasized the importance of respecting the competition. “Right now, we have few first-team players. It’s a little hard to play, but we have to respect the competition and move forward. There are no excuses,” he said.
On Sant Jordi, Lisci added: “They play with an odd-numbered defense. They have a striker, Pedro, who is dangerous — he scores a lot, almost a goal per game in his division. We have studied them, we have it under control, and we respect them as we do all opponents.”
Lisci also highlighted the importance of pace and fitness. “In División de Honor, there are quality players, and there are quality players in all divisions. What makes the difference is speed of play and physical condition. If we set the tempo and play at a speed similar to La Liga, we’ll be close to winning. If we slow the game down, their quality can show, and the match becomes complicated.”
He added that mental factors will also be key. “I don’t know if this is the most important match of their lives — some have played in Tercera or Segunda RFEF — but their motivation will be extremely high. They are playing at home, or close to it, and their fans will be there. One of the hardest things is matching that level of motivation. That’s why concentration is so important,” he said.
