Osasuna falls on the road against Real Betis, 5-2
The coach spoke at a news conference after the match at La Cartuja
Osasuna head coach Luis Miguel Ramis spoke at a news conference after the match at La Cartuja and said: "We made a mistake in the first half that weighed on us for the rest of the game, and it's something that's happened to us in previous matches. I think there was too little for Betis to be leading 2-0 at halftime. I believe we defended well and started to manage our ball possession better, which improved a lot in the second half. In my opinion, the penalty was very harsh because it was simply a player turning and a natural tussle in the box. I think there needs to be more to call a penalty. We are getting used to difficult decisions. In the second half, we played better and got ourselves into the game, but there was an incident that did not allow us to keep building momentum. It was a very clear play—I just saw it in the locker room—where, unintentionally, a Betis player fouled [midfielder] Rubén [García], which should have meant their goal was disallowed and the opponent would have been left with one less player. We played a better second half than first, but the circumstances of the match didn't let us play the final minutes with a bit more fairness."
Ramis also spoke about the team's improvement in the second half: "We defended better with the ball and had better possession. In my opinion, when Betis spends a long time in defensive blocks, they really struggle, and we took the ball away from them, dominated possession, switched play, and found our players between the lines—and that's when we grew and they suffered. That's when we felt capable and closed the gap on the scoreboard. We kept improving, going from less to more, but I think that play had a huge impact on the course of the match. It's true there were five goals, and we need to improve on that, but you also have to consider the context in which they happened. The team gave everything, grew during the second half, and dominated a very strong opponent that we knew was very intense and effective in transition and could cause the damage they did. But again, I insist, I think we tried to compete on equal terms in terms of decisions, but above all, that play really affected the final minutes, especially as the second half was going our way."
