Jagoba Arrasate: "It was a deserved defeat"

The Rojillo boss spoke to he media after the match

Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate acknowledged his team deserved the 2-0 loss to Sevilla.

“The first thing we have to do is accept the defeat,” Arrasate said at a postgame news conference. “It was a deserved defeat. Sevilla deserved to win and was the rightful winner.”

The Rojillo boss said the team failed to build on a promising start.

“The key was probably that we couldn’t sustain what we did in the opening 20 minutes, when we moved the ball quickly, created chances and did things well,” he said. “After that, we became predictable. Sevilla defended aggressively, won the individual battles and forced the game into our half. We had a particularly poor spell after the first goal.”

Arrasate acknowledged that Osasuna struggled to find a way back into the match in the second half.

“The second half was a case of trying but not being able to break through because they defended very well,” he said. “When you bring on two strikers and two wingers, you take risks because you believe you can equalize, but you also leave space. Their second goal came on a counterattack.

“Accepting reality is also part of the process, and we have to improve.”

Asked whether Sevilla’s two-striker formation had surprised him, Arrasate said Osasuna had anticipated the tactical approach.

“We expected it, which is why  Lucas Torró played,” he said. “We thought they might use two strikers and play direct balls toward them. The only question was whether it would be Robbie Ure or Lucas Stassin. They have often played with two strikers at home, and their midfield allows them to do that. In the end, the approach paid off with Isaac’s goal.”ien”.
