Osasuna Falls to Atlético Madrid, 2-1

Forwards Ademola Lookman and Alexander Sørloth scored for the visitors, while midfielder Kike Barja scored for Osasuna

Club Atlético Osasuna (11-9-16, 42 points) lost 2-1 at El Sadar against Atlético Madrid (20-6-10, 66 points) on Tuesday night. Forwards Ademola Lookman scored from the penalty spot and Alexander Sørloth added a second for the visitors, while midfielder Kike Barja pulled one back for Osasuna, who pushed forward but struggled to convert their chances.

The match began evenly, but on Atlético’s first approach to Osasuna’s box, the referee awarded a penalty for a defender Javi Galán handball after a VAR review. Lookman converted from the spot for a 1-0 lead. The side led by head coach Alessio Lisci responded with several crosses and corners, but Atlético’s defense held firm. Forward Ante Budimir had two good chances—one from a defender Valentin Rosier shot deflection and another in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Juan Musso—but both efforts narrowly missed the crossbar. Late in the first half, Osasuna pressed high and dominated possession, but their crosses found no finishers. Atlético created a chance through a break by defender Marc Pubill, but goalkeeper Aitor Fernández made a strong save. In stoppage time, the referee pointed to the spot for an Osasuna penalty after Musso clashed with Budimir, but VAR overturned the call.

In the second half, Osasuna again took control and threatened with several crosses. Midfielder Lucas Torró and defender Alejandro Catena both had chances, but their shots went wide. In the 66th minute, Budimir had the home side’s best opportunity with a header from a cross by defender Abel Bretones, but Musso produced a fine save. Atlético weathered the storm, regained possession, and Sørloth made it 2-0 with a close-range header. Despite the deficit, Osasuna continued to press, especially after defender Marcos Llorente was sent off for a second yellow card, leaving Atlético with 10 men. The hosts kept pushing, and midfielder Asier Osambela had two late efforts—one saved by Musso, the other over the bar. In the 90th minute, Barja cut the deficit with a shot from inside the box. In stoppage time, Osasuna appealed for a penalty after defender David Hancko pulled Budimir in the area, but neither the referee nor VAR intervened.

Osasuna’s next match is Sunday, May 17, when they host Espanyol at El Sadar. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. local (8 p.m. BST, 3 p.m. ET).
