Tajonar Experience: Osasuna's Methodology as a Tool to Help Football Grow

The Cameroonian international joined the coaching staff of a training session geared for U-16 to U-13 players.
Defender Enzo Boyomo has launched the third season of the Academy Optimization Program, featuring first-team players as coaches for youth training sessions at Osasuna Academy, Tajonar. The initiative aims to enhance skills, movements, and actions. In this particular session, the defender worked with young players aged U-13 to U-16.
The Cameroonian international led the inaugural session this year, focusing on the strategy of playing out from the back. Academy defenders and midfielders participated alongside Boyomo, 23, as well as Patxi Puñal, the club's football director of the academy and its all-time leader in appearances.
Patxi Puñal: "For academy players, it’s invaluable to have professionals guiding theirdevelopment"
Puñal emphasized the importance of first-team players joining the coaching staff for the development of young talents. "Having a first-team player involved is crucial. During the session, players can move around and assess each young player's style. After each exercise, the group reconvenes, allowing the first-team player to provide feedback and advice. For academy players, it's invaluable to have professionals guiding their development," Puñal said. "It also illustrates the connection between the first team and the academy, highlighting the significance of Osasuna."
Boyomo's presence serves as an inspiration for the young athletes. "To have someone they watch every weekend at El Sadar, someone they admire, really motivates them. For us, having a player like Boyomo join us is a true delight," Puñal added.
Enzo Boymo: "It’s crucial to know what you’ll teach them because they look up to youand are eager to learn from everything you share"
The excitement of these sessions extends beyond the academy athletes to the first-team players, who witness the positive impact their guidance has on the kids. "I'm happy to have joined the Academy for this session and hope to return soon. It's crucial to know what you'll teach them because they look up to you and are eager to learn from everything you share," Boyomo explained.
The two-day optimization program begins with a classroom session where academy players from various positions analyze specific concepts relevant to their roles. On the second day, they move to the pitch for a two-hour training session, applying what they learned with the benefit of first-team involvement.
Puñal pointed out the challenges coaches face in attending to every detail of each player during regular practice, as they often focus on group dynamics. "These sessions allow us to address situational training that closely simulates match circumstances, including details affecting each position. We also tackle less common scenarios to ensure players are prepared for any situation," he said.
The football director of Tajonar elaborated on the initial session's focus. "In this first session, we worked on playing out from the back. We began by gathering the players in a classroom to explain our objectives and showcase specific actions from their teams and professional squads. In the second part, we executed three different exercises simultaneously, with specialists and academy coaches overseeing each group."
