Osasuna tops Atlético de Madrid 4-1 on the road

A brace by forward Raúl García de Haro and goals by midfielders Aimar Oroz and Lucas Torró gave the win to the team led by head coach Jagoba Arrasate.

Madrid (Sunday, May 19, 2024) – Club Atlético Osasuna (12-8-17, 44 points) defeated Atlético de Madrid (23-4-10, 73 points) 4-1 at Estadio Cívitas Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon. Los Rojillos return from Madrid after defeating Los Colchoneros for the first time since the 2008-09 season when they won 4-2.

A brace by forward Raúl García de Haro and goals by midfielders Aimar Oroz and Lucas Torró gave the win to the team led by head coach Jagoba Arrasate.

In the first half, Torró had the first dangerous opportunity when he headed a corner kick on the far post but failed to find the back of the net as his header was blocked. Los Rojillos' set pieces proved effective as midfielder Rubén García placed a free kick inside the box, finding defender Alejandro Catena on the far side of the box. The defender headed the ball to the center of the box, where García de Haro tapped the ball past goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Unfortunately, only five minutes after the set piece, García was subbed off for Aimar due to an injury.

After the visiting side's goal, Los Colchoneros charged forward, looking for an equalizer with midfielder Samuel Lino and forwards Antoine Griezmann and Ángel Correa leading the attack. Goalkeeper Sergio Herrera recorded his first match save when he stopped Griezmann in the 33rd minute. Later, Lino had two back-to-back scoring opportunities. The first ended with Herrera parrying the ball to a corner kick; following the set piece, Lino curled a shot from the left side to the far post and shook the framework. Correa had Atlético's last chance of the match as he headed to a one-on-one duel with Herrera, but before he could get there, defender Jorge Herrando stopped him with an impressive slide tackle.

The first half ended with Aimar shaking the woodwork with a powerful shot from outside the box – which wouldn't take long for the homegrown player to print his name on the scoresheet.

In the second half, Atlético knocked first, but their attempt missed the target. Following their attempt, the Navarrese side responded with a dangerous cross from defender Rubén Peña to García de Haro, who tested Oblak with a powerful right footed shot. The goalkeeper stopped the shot but left a rebound, which midfielder Pablo Ibáñez almost placed in the back of the net, but the goalkeeper grabbed the ball before Ibáñez could get to it. A missed shot from García de Haro followed the opportunity. Minutes later, Torró had another chance, which Oblak saved, but Aimar found the rebound and increased the lead. Los Colchoneros wasted no time and three minutes responded with a goal by forward Álvaro Morata.

Despite cutting the distance, the Madrid side couldn't stop the Navarrese attacks. In the 64th minute, García de Haro scored his first brace as a rojillo when defender Jesús Areso sent a low cross from the right flank to the middle of the box. Atlético tried to score a second, but a solid rojillo backline kept them at bay. Arrasate continued to push his team forward by replacing García de Haro for forward Ante Budimir, which marked the return of the Croatian international to the pitch after suffering an injury on April 15. Los Rojillos sealed the win when Torró placed a volley in the bottom left corner after a cross from Ibáñez.

Osasuna will finish the season on Saturday, May 25, at El Sadar when they face Villarreal CF in Week 38 of LaLiga EA Sports. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CET (8 p.m. BST/3 p.m. ET).
