Osasuna Defeats Espanyol 2-0 to Keep European Hopes Alive
El Sadar lived an emotional day marked by the farewell tribute to longtime defender Unai García
Club Atlético Osasuna (12-15-10, 51 points) secured a vital 2–0 victory over Espanyol (10-9-18, 39 points) at El Sadar to remain in contention for European qualification. On an emotional day marked by the farewell tribute to longtime defender Unai García from the club and its supporters, forward Ante Budimir opened the scoring in the first half, and forward Raúl García sealed the result late in the match.
The home side started with an energetic, attack-minded approach, asserting control from the opening minutes. Early chances quickly materialized: Budimir forced a corner with a powerful shot, and midfielder Lucas Torró struck the crossbar with a header, underscoring Osasuna’s intent. With high pressing and a commitment to quick transitions, the hosts unsettled Espanyol’s back line. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute, when Budimir redirected midfielder Aimar’s long-range effort into the net. With that goal, the Croatian forward reached 21 for the season in LaLiga, setting a new club record for most goals in a single top-flight campaign.
Despite taking the lead, Osasuna continued pressing forward. Torró threatened again with a header that flew over the bar, and forward Bryan Zaragoza tested the goalkeeper with a shot from distance just before the break. The teams went into halftime with the hosts leading 1–0.
Osasuna resumed with renewed intensity, as Budimir led a swift counterattack that narrowly missed the target. The pace quickened as the match wore on, resulting in chances at both ends. In the 66th minute, goalkeeper Sergio Herrera made a crucial save to deny forward Roberto Fernández from close range and preserve the lead. Raúl then came close with a shot deflected for a corner before capitalizing on a well-executed counterattack moments later. After a solo run, he calmly slotted home to make it 2–0 and secure all three points for the Pamplona side.
With the win, Osasuna moves to 51 points and will travel to Vitoria to face Alavés in the final match of the LaLiga EA Sports season.
Following the match, the club and its fans paid heartfelt tribute to García, who bid farewell to El Sadar after 25 seasons with Osasuna, including 12 with the first team. The ceremony featured club president Luis Sabalza, former captains and teammates Oier Sanjurjo and Roberto Torres, and Unai’s brother and former Osasuna player Imanol García.
