Osasuna Supports Creation of David Beriain International Journalism Award
Club Atlético Osasuna has announced its sponsorship of the newly established David Beriain International Journalism Award, honoring the legacy of the late Spanish journalist. Club President Luis Sabalza attended the award's official presentation on Thursday in Artajona, Navarra, Beriain's hometown.
The biennial award recognizes journalists with outstanding international careers, excellence in reporting, and a strong commitment to defending human dignity and values such as honesty, freedom, respect, justice, and solidarity—principles that defined Beriain's work.
Beriain, along with journalists Roberto Fraile and Rory Young, was killed in Burkina Faso on April 26, 2021, while reporting on poaching and security issues. Following his death, Osasuna paid tribute to him by dedicating the locker room tunnel at El Sadar Stadium in his honor, featuring excerpts from his writings for the club's official magazine. One of his quotes, now displayed in the stadium, serves as a message to visiting teams:
"No one surrenders here. The only pride and forgiveness allowed is to give everything on the field, until the last minute of the last match. Here, we value sacrifice, humility, and honest hard work. We make sure the opponent knows that at El Sadar, they are not here to play — they are here to suffer. Here, we honor our past."
The award is organized by Beriain's family members, friends, and former colleagues, along with the Artajona City Council, the town's agricultural cooperative, and Club Atlético Osasuna. The jury consists of 10 journalists with personal and professional ties to Beriain, including his wife, Rosaura Romero (chair), and other respected reporters such as Mikel Ayestarán, Mayte Carrasco, Luis de Vega, Marc Marginedas, and Agus Morales.
The first award ceremony will occur in October at El Cerco de Artajona, a medieval fortress. The prize does not include a monetary award, but the winner will receive a custom artwork by local artist Kikin Bañales.
In conjunction with the award, journalism workshops will be held in Artajona and at the University of Navarra's School of Communication. Additionally, a dedicated website will be launched to serve as a digital archive of Beriain's work, ensuring that his contributions to journalism remain accessible to future generations.
