Osasuna falls 2-1 against Athletic Club at Estadio de Lasesarre

Midfielder Rubén García scored for Los Rojillos

Baracaldo, Spain (Saturday, August 3, 2024) – Club Atlético Osasuna fell 2-1 to Athletic Club in the Euskal Herria Txapela at Estadio de Lasesarre on Saturday night. Midfielder Rubén García equalized the game before the half-hour mark after forward Álvaro Djaló scored the opener, and forward Iñaki Williams sentence the game for the Lions in the second half.

The game started with Athletic Club's first opportunity following a free kick. In the fifth minute, midfielder Álex Berenguer delivered a cross from the left flank to the middle of the box, where midfielder Ohian Sancet forced goalkeeper Aitor Fernández to make a diving save. The Bilbao side took the lead 14 minutes later when Djaló placed the ball past Fernández after receiving a pass from midfielder Beñat Prados. In the 26th minute, midfielder Jon Moncayola delivered a cross from the right flank finding García, who headed the ball to equalize the game. For the remainder of the half, both teams tried to create chances, but their opponent’s defense was able to cut the attacks.

In the second half, Osasuna tried with quick transitions and crosses by defender Rubén Peña from the right flank. Athletic regained the lead just after the hour mark thanks to a curl by Williams. Los Rojillos had a chance to tie the game when midfielder Iker Muñoz found forward Ante Budimir, but the Croatian international could not send it to the back of the net.
 
Los Rojillos will close its preseason when they face Deportivo Aláves on Saturday, August 10, in Tajonar. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CET (6 p.m. BST/1 p.m. ET).
