Osasuna earns road point with a 2-2 tie against Athletic Club at San Mamés

Los rojillos couldn't capitalize on their two-goal lead.

Bilbao (Saturday, May 11, 2024) – Club Atlético Osasuna (11-17-17, 40 points) earned a point on the road with a 2-2 draw against Athletic Club (17-11-7, 62 points) at San Mamés on Saturday night.

Forward Raúl García scored the opening goal of the game, his fourth of the season, when defender Johan Mojica fired a low-cross, and the striker stuck his leg out to send the ball to the back of the net. Two minutes after the break, midfielder Rubén García collected a pass from Jesús Areso to lead a counter-attack and place the ball behind goalkeeper Unai Simon.

The game started with both teams seeing goals called off due to offside. First, forward Nico Williams thought he had given his team the advantage, but he was caught offside. In the 17th minute, Raúl García seemed to have outrun the home side's backline just to be ruled offside after hitting the net. Later, midfielder Iker Muniain thought he had scored, but the VAR reverted the call and annulled it.

After Osasuna's second goal, Athletic cut the lead when forward Iñaki Williams fired a right footed shot into the top left corner. Following the goal, los rojillos kept pushing forward with different chances but couldn't score their third goal. In one of those plays, The Joker attempted to dribble past a defender inside the box, but defender Yuri Berchiche stepped on the rojillo, knocking him down; however, neither the referee nor VAR thought the play needed to be reviewed. Following the play, the home side began to gain momentum with transition plays and, in stoppage time, scored the equalizer when forward Asier Villalibre found a rebound inside the six-yard box.

Osasuna will return to action on Tuesday, May 14, in the Club's second-to-last home game of the season to host RCD Mallorca in Week 36 of LaLiga EA Sports. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CET (6:30 p.m. BST/1:30 p.m. ET) at El Sadar.
