Osasuna defeats Alavés 1-0 at El Sadar

Forward Ante Budimir became the first rojillo to score 14 goals in a single season since the 2000-01 season.

Pamplona (Monday, March 4, 2024) – Club Atlético Osasuna (10-6-11, 36 points) defeated Deportivo Alavés (7-8-12, 29 points) 1-0 at El Sadar on Monday night. Los rojillos earned the three points thanks to a golazo by forward Ante Budimir in the 76th minute, making the Croatian international the first rojillo player to score 14 goals in a single season since the 2000-01 season when Iván Rosado completed the feat.

Los blanquiazules were the first team to knock at the opponent’s door as midfielder Jon Guridi headed a cross from defender Javi López from close range. Still, goalkeeper Sergio Herrera quickly stopped the ball from going in with a saving dive on the line. After the 30-minute mark, Osasuna had two chances via midfielder Lucas Torró and defender David García. First, Torró tried with a shot that missed the target, and seconds later, García connected a header that barely missed the post. Midfielder Aimar Oroz also had a chance when he blasted a shot from inside the box, but goalkeeper Antonio Sivera kept the ball from going in. In stoppage time, forward Samu struck the post with a right footed shot.

The second half was very similar to the first, with both teams keeping each other at bay; soon enough, los rojillos began creating chances. Midfielder Jon Moncayola had the first opportunity with a shot from outside the box. However, midfielder Rubén García and Budimir proved to be the difference makers of the evening. It was a play between these two that opened the scoreline. Despite trailing, the visiting side continued to press on Osasuna, but a solid performance by the rojillo backline and Herrera, helped the team reach its ninth clean sheet of the season.

Osasuna’s next game will be on Saturday, March 9, at Estadi Montilivi against Girona FC in Week 28 of LaLiga EA Sports. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CET (8 p.m. GMT/3 p.m. ET).
