Osasuna falls 2-0 against FC Barcelona in the Spanish Supercup semifinals
Following a foul on forward Jose Arnaiz, a goal by forward Robert Lewandowski made the game a one-sided affair.
Riyadh (Thursday, January 11, 2024) – Club Atlético Osasuna (0-0-1) fell 2-0 against FC Barcelona (1-0-0) in the Spanish Supercup semifinal on Thursday night at Al-Awwal Stadium. Los rojillos put up a fight during the first half and created clear opportunities. However, following a foul on forward Jose Arnaiz, a goal by forward Robert Lewandowski made the game one-sided. Forward Lamine Yamal sealed the score in stoppage time as los rojillos tried to find the tie.
In the first half, los rojillos showed a strong backline and helped goalkeeper Sergio Herrera to keep his goal unharmed as los culés dominated the possession. As time passed, los rojillos tried to impose themselves with dangerous shots. Defender Jesús Areso and forward Jose Arnaiz were the two rojillo that got close to breaking the tie. First, the homegrown player tried with a right-footed shot from the center of the box but barely missed the target. Then, Arnaiz saw one opportunity blocked, and two minutes later, his long-range shot was saved.
Osasuna started defending well in the second half but, in a controversial play, saw the opposition take the lead. Arnaiz controlled a pass at the hour mark, and following the control, defender Andreas Christensen took him down. Despite having called similar actions throughout the match, the referee did not see this as a foul and continued the play, which eventually turned into the opening goal.
The Navarrese squad tried to level the score in the final stretch of the match as they created several chances. In the 80th minute, Budimir saw an opportunity blocked, and eight minutes later, forward Raúl García tried with a volley from 18 yards out, but his shot went over the crossbar. Despite los rojillos persistence, the Catalonians withheld their ground, and in stoppage time, Yamal scored the final goal.
Osasuna’s next game will be against Real Sociedad in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, January 17, at El Sadar. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CET (8 p.m. GMT/3 p.m. ET).
